When You Want to Hibernate (But Your To-Do List Won't Let You)
A 30-second solution to seasonal energy slumps
I’ve always felt like February is the Monday of months.
You know that mid-afternoon energy crash that usually sends you reaching for a little caffeinated or sugary pick-me-up? February is basically that, but stretched out over 28(ish) days… a short time for a month, but a loooooong Monday.
So if you're moving a little slower lately, feeling a bit more "meh" than usual, or wondering if bears have the right idea about this whole hibernation thing — that may be why.
And if you're running a business or juggling client work, that seasonal energy dip hits differently. Because while the sun might be taking a vacation from your neck of the woods, your to-do list definitely isn't.
But before you pour a bunch of sugar into a cup and add a few drops of espresso – you don't have to white-knuckle your way through until spring.
Let's talk about how breathwork can help you navigate these darker days, boost your energy, and keep your mental clarity sharp – even when the weather is trying to turn you into a human-shaped blanket burrito.
Why Winter Hits Differently
Ever wonder why winter can feel so... heavy, like wet snow?
It's not just in your head. When we get less sunlight, our bodies get a bit dramatic about it… almost like they’re protesting the shorter days. Some of us get the winter blues, while others experience full-on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – a diagnosable form of depression.
If you're feeling extra slothy, craving all the carbs (I see you, third slice of sourdough), or finding it harder to focus on work, your body is probably feeling the seasonal shift.
The good news is that breathwork is a potent weapon for those days when the gray skies are feeling a little TOO gray.
How Breathwork Changes the Game
Sadly, we can't control the sun (if I could, I'd definitely adjust its schedule for better work-life balance), but we can control how we respond to these darker days.
Remember, breathwork isn't just about taking deep breaths – it's about strategically using your breath to shift your energy, clear your mind, and reset your mood. Think of it as your personal remote control for your nervous system.
Here's a great technique for an instant energy boost when you're feeling the winter sluggishness kick in:
Lion’s Breath (Simhasana) for Energy & Mood Boosting
This dynamic breath releases tension, wakes up the mind, and adds a little playfulness to boot (because let’s be honest, winter can feel a little too serious sometimes).
🔹 How to do it:
Sit comfortably, either cross-legged or kneeling.
Inhale deeply through your nose.
Open your mouth wide, stick out your tongue as far as possible, and exhale forcefully with a loud “ha” sound.
For even more lion vibes, widen your eyes while you stick your tongue out, and spread your fingers out nice and wide (think “jazz hands”)
Repeat 5-10 times, feeling the release in your face and upper body.
Why it works: Lion’s Breath activates the vagus nerve, releases facial tension, and boosts circulation. It’s perfect for shaking off stagnation and bringing in fresh energy.
Plus it’s quick and easy (two adjectives of which I am a huge fan). Like if you’re about to jump on a Zoom call and need a quick boost, you could take a few of these breaths while the call is connecting and feel more alert before the meeting even starts.
Give Lion’s Breath a try next time you feel that winter sluggishness creeping in – you know, when your energy is somewhere between "need coffee" and "need hibernation". 30 seconds might be all you need to shift from zombie to total pro.
